To renew the Brazilian passport for individuals over 18 years old, the process involves replacing the current passport with a new one, rather than a direct renewal. Below are the general steps to apply for a new passport:
1. Gather the Documents
-
You’ll need to send your physical passport (keep in mind that you’ll be without this document for a while, so if you don’t have a local ID, arrange that first so you’re not left without any ID). If your passport has been expired for over 2 months, you’ll also need to send another photo ID, such as your Brazilian ID or driver’s license.
-
Birth or marriage certificate (original or notarized copy).
-
Proof of compliance with electoral obligations (for those aged 18 to 70).
-
If you are a man between 18 and 45 years old, a document proving military service compliance.
-
A recent passport-style photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm – different from the Brazilian standard). You’ll need to send a printed version and also upload a digital copy. Make sure it follows the required standards: white background, well-lit, no shadows, neutral clothing, and not a selfie. Some places like Australia Post offer this service.
You’ll need to upload all documents while filling out the form at the link below. But you’ll also need to send physical copies inside an envelope, which we’ll explain later:
2. Access the e-Consular
-
Go to the e-Consular website: https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br/sci/pages/web/ui/#/instrucoes-iniciais-pacom
-
Create your account and follow the steps to fill out the form and submit your documents.
Since we live in Perth and the passport is issued in Canberra, besides the in-person option, you can also send the documents via Australia Post.
3. Choose How You’ll Send the Documents
-
In Person: Check how to schedule an appointment at the consulate and plan your trip to Canberra.
-
By Mail: After completing the form, you’ll receive a protocol. Wait for the final confirmation from the Embassy before sending your documents. Keep an eye on your email. Once they approve the information and documents, follow the instructions, print the protocol, attach your photo, and prepare to send your documents. ATTENTION TO THE NEXT STEP.
4. Payment + Sending Documents to the Embassy
-
At Australia Post, inform them you’re sending documents to the Embassy and need a registered envelope.
You’ll need two envelopes: one to send your documents and another (blank) inside it for the return, along with the Australia Post cheque. -
Regarding the cheque: besides postage and envelope costs (payable by card or cash), you must include the passport fee. IMPORTANT: You cannot send cash to the Embassy. Ask for an Australia Post Money Order made out to Embassy of Brazil.
-
The current passport fee is AU$228.00, and this amount must be paid in cash, as Australia Post doesn’t accept card payments for money orders.
-
Put the cheque inside the envelope along with the protocol and all required documents.
Mailing address:
EMBASSY OF BRAZIL
19 Forster Crescent, Yarralumla
ACT – 2600
5. Track the Delivery
-
If you want to track your package, use the tracking codes from the envelopes. Don’t forget to take pictures of both tracking codes so you can monitor the delivery to the Embassy and the return of your passport to your address.
-
Once the passport is ready (within 5 business days), you’ll receive it by mail, along with all the documents you submitted.
